CHARACTER
Character Name: Kougaiji
Character Age: 500+ (though he appears to be ~22)
Canon: Saiyuki
Canon Point: Saiyuki Reaload Chapter 13, end. Kougaiji has just snapped out of Ni Jianyi's brainwashing, rescued his sister, and marched off with the rest of his party in a grand "Fuck you" style.
World Description:
History: Have a wiki link. Wikia doesn't always behave with direct links, so if it doesn't direct you straight to the history tab, I apologize. You can get there by clicking the "history" tag at the top.
Personality: On the surface, Kougaiji is a strong-willed, level-headed stoic. His usual expressions and emotions are those of determination, strength and silence. He rarely says more than is strictly necessary in conversation. He values his teammates - his friends - and while he doesn't shut them out, he does keep personal things quiet unless outright asked. Even then, he's hesitant. Still, there's charisma in his strength. He's a prince, after all, and there's a certain element of pride that comes with that.
And yet, Kougaiji is, surprisingly, a kind soul. His father was known to be a monster, a devourer of human flesh who refused to play nicely with humans. His mother however, was an open-minded, warm-hearted individual. He more than often takes after her, though he may not outwardly admit as much. His father's mistresswho is a psychopath and not to be trusted at all regards him with scorn for this, sneering as she often tells him that to say such warm things while looking so much like his father absolutely disgusts her. ... Needless to say, he absolutely abhors that woman.
As prince of the Youkai, he genuinely cares for his people, even the ones who have lost their sanity due to the Minus Wave. He and his cohorts at least try to go out of their way to be sure that no innocents are harmed when they're performing whatever duty they must (which is more than can be said for the protagonists of the series, but we won't hold that against them too much). His loyalty to his people has earned him that loyalty in return. He even went as far as to rescue Yaone, a stranger at the time, from the hands of a woman-eating youkai simply because he didn't wish to even think about the kind of fate she would suffer. Not that he admits as much out loud, specifically informing her that he did not simply rescue her, and she is to work as his apothecary from then on. But... they both know the truth. Deep down. And he seems to be okay with that. All of his comrades trust him with their lives, and he trusts them in return.
His pride can be a bit of a weak point, especially if pushed. If his pride is threatened, compromised or otherwise shot at, he will go as far as to temporarily forget his own priorities to pay back whoever has wronged him. This has definitely landed him in quite a bit of trouble before, picking fights before thinking things through and getting himself battered, bloody and bruised by a berserked Son Goku, for example.
Kougaiji's main weakness is his mother. She's been sealed away for 500 years, and Kougaiji will do anything if there is a chance that it will free her. It's certainly why he was stuck listening to that wretched bat of a woman - by holding his mother's curse over his head, she easily turned him into her little puppet and assassin. He's recently freed himself of this, having found his own resolve and reason to live after (1) meeting the Sanzo group and learning what it is that makes them so strong, and (2) having his friends pull him out of the brainwashed-induced darkness with their unwavering loyalty and friendship. And though he's uncertain exactly where to go from here, how to accomplish what is needed on his own terms, he at least knows he is not alone - and that he is that much stronger for it.
→ On his relationship with the Sanzo-ikkou. Sanzo and his party are, in theory, Kougaiji's enemies. In the beginning, he was ordered to kill them all, as their goal is to foil Gyokumen Koushou's plan to revive the Ox King (Kougaiji's father) and to discover the source of the Minus Wave that drove all demons to insanity. Since then, the lines have become a little... fuzzy. When sending his assassins to deal with the party didn't work, nor did Yaone's solo efforts, he took it upon himself to go after them. (at least partly because throwing lives away by sending his people after these guys was really pissing him off.) His interactions with them, while brief, have solidified his resolve more than anything else. Yes, he still wants to save his mother - but on his own terms, with his own strength. The Sanzo party helped him realize that. He's never going to admit it even on his goddamned deathbed, admittedly, but it's true. There's an unspoken respect between the two groups, and Kougaiji especially feels indebted to them for giving him the push he needed, whether they realize the extend of what they have done or not. It is not going to stop him from taking them all down, should they continue to stand between him and his own goals. They are still, in his mind, his enemies. But there is a bond there that is deeper than any of the involved parties will admit to out loud.
Inventory: The clothes (and jewelryseriously, kou? geez) he usually wears. Nothing else. Sorry, your highness.
Abilities:
• Pyrokinetics - Full mastery of fire conjuring and manipulation. Smoke is fair game, too.
• Summoning magic - Can summon lesser fiends (with no mind of their own) from another plane, to fight on his behalf - these range from tiny, annoying things, to this gigantic hellfire ogre right here.
• Demonic strength/speed - Youkai are inherently stronger and faster than humans. Kougaiji is no exception, and he's of royal blood even on top of that.
• Combat Training - Excels in hand-to-hand combat. He inherently has a fighter's spirit, and on top of that, he's got a helluva lot of experience. He typically sticks to his fire magic and his claws, and he is very deadly.
Flaws: Ha. Well, there are a few intrinsic things of note:
• He is stubborn, to the point of near tunnel vision when pissed enough to focus so fiercely.
• He's also proud enough that he's often reluctant to admit to his own faults
• He is a demon. ("youkai"). In fact, he's a demon prince. And, sure, he takes a little bit more after his mother's kind heart and open-minded attitude than his father's monstrous ways, but he's still a demon. Chaos comes with the territory.
• Boy howdy does he have a temper when he's made to care...
Also worth mentioning is that he comes from a canon point where he only just snapped out of being brainwashed into acting as a senseless killer who obeyed only an abhorrent woman seeking revenge and the revival of the demon king. (yes, his father. oops.) So, yeah, being a brainwashed psychokiller counts for chaos, too. Right?
